Indian Catholic Church on Lake Chelan near
Manson, Washington.
Below
is a well-known Indian church, near the town of Manson, built from
salvaged lumber by Wapato John in 1888. Both Wapato John and his
son, Peter Wapato, conducted services at the church when no priest
was available. The last service was at the funeral of Peter Wapato,
at age 96, in 1949. The church burned down in 1953. My mother,
Marvel King, took this photo, and I created the painting with
my computer. Please note that the subtleties of the original are
lost at this resolution.
Photo at right is of Peter
Wapato. Origin unknown.
